Birthday bingo: the party game every guest can play
Birthday parties have one problem no other party has: the guest list runs from the youngest cousin to the oldest grandparent, and most games suit one end or the other. Bingo suits both. Here is how to run birthday bingo that everyone joins in with, using a free caller that does the calling so the host gets to enjoy the party too.
What you need
- A screen everyone can see. The TV is best. Open the free bingo caller on a laptop and cast it or plug it in, or run it on a tablet propped on the table for a smaller group.
- Tickets. Print them from the free printable bingo cards, or send guests the game link and their phones become tickets. Mixing the two is fine.
- Something to mark with. Pens, stickers, or thumbs on phones.
- Prizes. Small and plentiful beats one big one: sweets, stickers, a wooden spoon trophy for the grown-ups, and one proper prize for the full house.
Setting it up in two minutes
- Open The Hoster and name the game after the birthday person: "Maggie's 70th" or "Leo is 8" goes up on the marquee.
- Pick the Birthday theme under Advanced settings, Special themes. Balloons, bunting, a cake and presents surround the board, and the whole game changes colour to match.
- Set the pace to Slow if there are children or older relatives playing. You can speed it up mid-game.
- Choose the voice. Daniel and Alice are the recorded British callers; there are German and Polish voices too.
- Hand the birthday person the big gold Let's Play Bingo! button. The countdown runs, the caller starts, and the party is on.
Running the games
Play short games. Three or four rounds where the first line wins something small and the full house wins the main prize keeps every age in it, because a child who is one number from a line is exactly as excited as an adult who is one number from a full house. The caller pauses the moment someone shouts, the win is checked against the called board so there is no arguing, and one tap resumes the night.
The number of the day tip: when the caller lands on the birthday age, everyone cheers, and if the birthday person has that number on their ticket they get a bonus prize. For the bigger birthdays, a 40th, a 60th, a 70th, that single number turns into the moment of the evening.
Kids' birthday bingo
For a children's party, keep it to a line rather than a full house, put the pace on Slow, and switch on Auto-tick for the youngest so their cards mark themselves and they can concentrate on shouting.
